Moderate walk 2.5 hours. Ride 2 - 2.75 hours. Fields, forest track then ascent to moorland
This fifth phase of the Epynt Way leads from the cattle grid above Craigrwyddon to the red kite viewing point at Fedw. It crosses open country to pass an ancient site before using a forest track. Leaving the track it traverses a series of small streams before climbing an old track up to the cross-country driving course. The route then heads across open land to join up with old track that runs beside the main military road down to the Fedw viewing point.
After reaching point 5A (SN 859368) at the corner of a Forestry block, proceed NE to point 5B (SN 860369) Follow a sheep track E down to a gap at the fence corner. Drop down to cross the road at point 5C (SN 864369), a bridge near to the ancient hill fort of Clawdd Brythonig. Follow the old lane up to turn E through a bridle gate then along a hard track for 2 km.
Leaving the track at point 5D (SN 857352), proceed along a grassy bridle lane, crossing a stream to reach a bridle gate. This is an ancient bridle path but here it is crossing a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest). Please keep to the fence and hedge line for the next 100m. Continue along the track to pass through a gateway at point 5E (SN 856348).
Leave the track here to climb up to the corner of the field and make a ‘U’ turn onto a grass track leading E up to a road crossing at point 5F (SN 856345). (You can follow this road SW for 500m to follow the Crychan Trails into the Halfway Forest.)
Continue climbing up a well-defined track to reach a bridle gate at point 5G (SN 860344). You are now at altitude 428m having ascended 133m from 5E. From here the path turns generally S, running along beside the cross-country driving course to point 5H (SN 856336). Riders should be able to find a firmer route through this rather boggy section by adopting a more W route slightly downhill from the waymarked track.
The final part of this phase crosses open moorland to pass between 2 forestry blocks before joining the old hard track alongside the present military road at point i5 (SN 861326) to reach Fedw at point 5J (SN 861318).
